There are so many posts on Facebook every day. Your friends write about their activities and emotions. It happens quite often that you think how boring this is and who might care about it. But sometimes there are funny and special characters within the mass of posts. Signs like ♥, ☼, ☎ make the typeface less monotonous. But how can you add these characters, emoticons and symbols to your status updates, comments and chats? Check it out:

Characters by key sequences (ALT-Symbols)

To produce ALT symbols on windows, press and hold the ALT key and, while holding it, enter a special number combination. You have to use the numbers on the right side of the keybord for entering the ALT symbols. If you don’t have a numeric keypad (laptops often don’t have one), you need to hold both the ALT and Fn key and then press the (coloured) numbers that you can find next to the letters on your keyboard. Don’t use the numbers on top of your keyboard as they don’t work to create symbols.

How to Do a windows xp repair install?

An XP repair install can be useful if your computer has a problem that you can’t fix but you don’t want to resort to reinstalling the entire operating system.

The repair installation will reinstall the core files of the Windows operating system, while leaving your data and drivers intact.

This repair technique can be completed in a relatively short amount of time and once done, will leave your system in a fresh state, hopefully repairing the issues that were plaguing it.

Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer. Restart your computer and press the function key that will show you the boot manager window.

This function key is usually F10, F11 or F12, but varies depending on computer manufacturer.

The BIOS bootup screen will show you what key this is, but if you don’t see it, check with your computer manufacturer

Select the option to boot from your CD drive, then press any key on your computer when you see the message “Press any key to boot from CD”.

This will start the Windows Setup program, which contains the Repair Installation tool as one of the options Wait for the setup program to fully load (this may take a few moments).

Select the option to install Windows once the setup program has finished Do not select the option to enter the Recovery Console.

Press the F8 key to agree to the terms and conditions of the Windows license agreement.

Choose the hard drive or system partition on which your XP operating system is installed and then select the Repair option.

Once you confirm that you want to repair the installation, the automated repair tool will take over and begin to reinstall the operating system.

Begin your Work Cited page on a clear sheet and center the words
“Work Cited” on the top line of the page.

Your page should include 1-inch margins and follow the same header format as the rest of your paper.

Double-space all citations, and create hanging indentations on all second and subsequent lines of each citation.

Each new citation should begin at the margin.

Alphabetize your citations by author’s last name, and make sure your capitalization and punctuation are appropriate.

Use italics or underline the titles of large works, such as books and magazines Use quotation marks for poems and articles.

If your reference has no listed author, list the book alphabetically by the book’s title.

List the page numbers to refer the reader to the page on which you obtained your quotation or information.

Format each entry on your Works Cited page according to the style standards your instructor requires.

How to do an IP release and renew

If you hook up a new computer, a new Hard Drive, or a re-formatted Hard Drive to your modem, more than likely you will need to release and renew the IP Address to get an Internet connection.

If you see the error, “Limited or No Connectivity,” or “Network Cable Unplugged” (and your ethernet or USB cable is not unplugged), then you need to renew your IP Address to get on the Internet and here’s how you do so.

* Your machine must have TCP/IP installed.
* The TCP/IP must be configured for using DHCP to gain access to the UWO Campus Network from a RezNet or Public port otherwise the port will get locked.

To release and renew your IP address:

1. Go to “Start > Run” and type “cmd” (no quotes), then select “OK”

2. Type “ipconfig /release” (no quotes) and press “Enter”

3. Once the prompt returns, type “ipconfig /renew” (no quotes), then hit “Enter,”

4. Finally, type “exit” (without quotes) then press “Enter” to close the window.

How to do an IP trace from email address

1. Log on to your email account and open the email you wish to trace.

2. Next, select the downward arrow to the right of the reply button. Choose the option that says “Show Original.” In some email programs you will need to look for the view source option.

3. Look for text that refers to where the email originated. Scroll down to the bottom of the list.

4. Select the email address at the very bottom of the list. This is where the email originated.

5. Look up the email by the message ID. Every email has a message ID number printed on it beneath the address information. It will look like this: Message-ID:. If there are many instances of Received: from with the IP address, select the IP address in the last pattern. If there are no instances of Received: from with the IP address, select the first IP address in X-Originating-IP.

6. Track the IP address of the sender.

Finding IP address in Hotmail

1.Log into your Hotmail/Windows Live account with your username and password.

2. Click on the Inbox link on the left.

3. Under the column that says “Sort by”, find the email that you want to track and right-click on it. You should get a menu that has something like Mark as read, Mark as unread, and so on. The last option in the menu should be View message source. Select it.

4. You should see the email headers now.

5. You may copy the headers and use my IP address detection script to ease the process. Or if you want to manually find the IP address, proceed to step 6.

6. If you find a header with X-Originating-IP: followed by an IP address, that is the sender’s IP address

7. If that doesn’t work, look for Received: from followed by IP address within square brackets[].

8. If you have multiple Received: from headers, eliminate the ones that have proxy.anyknownserver.com.

9. Track the IP address of the sender.

Creating smileys is a popular activity for many using the computer and if you can’t make smileys, you may just be feeling a little left out. Emoticons, also known as smiley faces, add interest and personality to otherwise plain text by invigorating your thoughts with easy-to-see emotion. Messages and notes on Facebook are more interesting with smiley faces. Emoticons can express happiness, amusement, anger, sadness, shock, mischievousness and even tears. Liven up your thoughts and communicate emotion with a few keystrokes. Engage readers with smiley faces, frowns or even a furled eyebrow. It’s quick and easy to do.

How Does WordPress Handle Smileys?

By default, WordPress automatically converts text smileys to graphic images. When you type in your post you see smile emoticon when you preview or publish your post.
To Turn off Graphic Smileys

If you turn off graphic smileys, whatever you type in plain text will remain, and be displayed, as plain text.

1. Go to your Admin Panel

2. Select Settings -> Writing

3. In the Formatting section, uncheck the box for “Convert emoticons like and to graphics on display”

Turning off emoticons means that when you type in a post you will see when you preview or publish your post. So it doesn’t stop you from using emoticons as plain text.

1. Find your smiley image files in the /wp-includes/images/smilies directory and back them up to another directory

2. Note the names of each smiley file. Your files must match these names and should be in the same ‘gif’ image format.

3. For predictable behavior, the image sizes should be similar.

4. Upload your new files to the /wp-includes/images/smilies directory with an FTP program.

If you’re up to hacking the code:

If you really must change the file names of the images, edit the file that refers to these images, ‘vars.php’ (in WordPress 2.2, they’re located in ‘functions.php’), situated in the /wp-includes/ directory. Follow all precautions when “hacking code”.

* Write a sentence on the chat window that will go well next to an emoticon. Any sentence that expresses emotion-be it anger, sadness, happiness or shock-can be accompanied by an emoticon.

* Choose an emoticon that goes well with the sentence. The following is a list of emoticons:

How to do an IPconfig on a Mac

IPconfig in Mac OS X serves as a wrapper to the IPConfiguration agent, and can be used to control the BootP and DHCP client from the command line interface. Like most UNIX-based operating systems, Mac OS X also uses ifconfig for more direct control over network interfaces, such as configuring static IP addresses.

How to do an IPconfig on a Mac

1. The first command we’ll use is grep, a simple pattern matching filter. We’ll make what Unix geeks call a “pipe” by separating the two commands with the “|” symbol, which causes the output of the first command to be fed to the second command as its input. Put them together:

$ ifconfig | grep “inet”
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
inet6 fe80::1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0×1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
inet6 fe80::230:65ff:fe03:25bc prefixlen 64 scopeid 0×5
inet 10.0.0.104 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

2. A lot better already! Now, let’s narrow it down to just the “inet” fields, not the “inet6″ (which is actually IPv6, but that’s beyond the scope of this discussion) by adding a space to the pattern:

$ ifconfig | grep “inet ”
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
inet 10.0.0.104 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

3. Almost done. The second line has the real IP information for my computer because the IP address 127.0.0.1 is special, it’s called your “loopback” address and always refers to your own computer, regardless of if you are running a Mac, PC, Linux or any other sort of machine. Just part of the definition of the underlying TCP/IP protocol.

4. To get rid of that spurious match, I’ll use grep again, but this time I’ll include the ‘-v’ flag, which reverses the logic of the search (that is, it’ll match all lines that do not match the specified pattern):

$ ifconfig | grep “inet ” | grep -v 127.0.0.1
inet 10.0.0.104 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

That’s short and sweet. One more step, just a little one, to remove the stuff we don’t really care about in the output, okay? For this, I’m going to use cut, a great command line utility, to show me just the second field in the line, using spaces as a delimiter:

$ ifconfig | grep “inet ” | grep -v 127.0.0.1 | cut -d\ -f2
10.0.0.104

Perfect! Now, final step, save this as a Bash alias by typing in the following (exactly):

$ echo alias myip=”ifconfig | grep ‘inet ‘ | grep -v 127.0.0.1 |
cut -d\ -f2″ >> ~/.bashrc

5. Exit your Terminal window and launch a new one, and from this time forward you’ll always be able to simply type myip to find out what your current IP address is, all within the terminal!
