Making Messy Bun Hairstyle

* Detangle your hair first. For the purpose, you should comb your hair well, using a brush.

* It won’t be possible to tuck the hair to form a messy bun, if it is frizzy. Therefore, you will need to apply an anti-frizz serum, mousse or gel before tying the hair.

* Comb your hair again. Now, pull it backwards to form a ponytail. If you want to sport a low bun, form the ponytail at the nape of your neck. For a higher bun, pull your hair back and tie it to form a high ponytail.

* After tying the ponytail with an elastic band, smoothen out the bumps, using a bristled brush.

* Coil your hair around the base of the ponytail. Now, make use of another elastic band, to secure the ponytail at the back of your head. By doing this, you hair will look like a small donut in the middle of your head.

* Secure the strands in the sides into the bun, using bobby pins. Since you are making a messy bun, you should not tuck the hair strands tightly, rather fit them in loosely.

* To give the final touch to your bun, pull out a few strands of hair from it, using your fingers. You may also make use of a fine toothed comb for the purpose.

* To retain the shape of the messy bun for a long time, apply a hairspray on the hair, lightly.

The messy bun is one of the perfect updo hairstyles that suits just about any occasion. Whether you’re in high school, or going for prom, or are out for a dinner, or headed off to a grand event, its a one stop solution for any event. It’s easy to make (because it’s messy, and you don’t have to be perfect with it). In fact, not only is it the answer to your hairstyle woes for different occasions, it is the best way to tackle a bad hair day. Trendy and chic, yet classy and sophisticated; you just can’t go wrong with the messy bun. Presented here is a guide on how to do a messy bun, for long and curly hair.

Make a Messy Bun for Long Hair:

The messy bun hairstyle works best for those who have hair that is shoulder length or longer. Those with shorter hair may be able to create a messy bun using a hair rat. Take a look at this step by step guide on how to make a messy bun.

  1. Start with the regular shampoo and conditioning routine. Towel dry your hair.
  2. Take a small amount of straightening hair gel and apply it all over, from the root to the tip of your hair. Run your fingers through your hair so that the gel is evenly distributed.
  3. Now blow-dry your hair with medium heat, by taking four-inch hair sections, and hold the hair dryer about 3-4 inches away from your hair. Straighten out your hair with this process. For some help with this step read how to blow dry hair straight.
  4. If you have a fringe, separate it from the rest of your hair. Comb all your hair backwards. Smoothen your hair with your hands, and apply a non-aerosol hair spray on the crown. Again, brush your hair and smoothen it.
  5. Bend down so that all your hair is flipped forward. Use a paddle brush and collect all your hair, tying it into a high ponytail if you want a high messy bun, or at the nape of your neck if you want a lower messy bun. For a lower messy bun you need not flip your hair forward and collect it into a ponytail. Just do it in the regular manner. Use an elastic that matches your hair color. Smooth out all the bumps that may have formed on the crown with your hand, or using the brush. However, don’t make the pony tail tight. Leave a little ‘poof’ around at the crown and around to give the hair more volume and achieve the perfect messy bun.
  6. Stay in the same position, and fan out your hair in all directions, so that it is like a fountain.
  7. Hold the center of the fountain, and start swirling your hair ends around the center, in a clockwise direction.
  8. Keep doing this, till all your hair is tucked in and around the bun. Remember, that the bun should be tied loosely.
  9. Secure the bun in place, using pins. Tease the roll slightly, so that it appears more voluminous.
  10. Now, run your fingers through the hair on your crown, so that it is slightly loosened from the elastic. This also adds texture to the overall look.
  11. Wear a thin, black headband three inches away from your hair line. Wear a second one two inches away from the first one. Use a darker hair band for light hair, and a lighter hair band for dark hair.
  12. Lastly, if you’ve always wanted to hold your hair in a bun with a hair stick, now is the time to pierce one through your bun for the final effect.
  13. Your bangs can be styled either in a wavy manner, or straight, depending on your choice.
