Emoticons, also known as smiley faces, add interest and personality to otherwise plain text by invigorating your thoughts with easy-to-see emotion. Messages and notes on Facebook are more interesting with smiley faces. Emoticons can express happiness, amusement, anger, sadness, shock, mischievousness and even tears. Liven up your thoughts and communicate emotion with a few keystrokes. Engage readers with smiley faces, frowns or even a furled eyebrow. It’s quick and easy to do.

1.Log in to Facebook and go to chat feature, situated at the bottom right corner of the page. Select one of your friends available on chat.

2.Write a sentence on the chat window that will go well next to an emoticon. Any sentence that expresses emotion-be it anger, sadness, happiness or shock-can be accompanied by an emoticon.

3.Choose an emoticon that goes well with the sentence. The following is a list of emoticons:

  • Happy :) – Colon followed by a parentheses
  • Very happy =) – Equals sign followed by a parentheses
  • Grinning :D – Colon followed by an uppercase d
  • Cat smiling ^_^ – Shift and press six, underscore, shift and press six
  • Wink smile ;) – Semicolon followed by a parentheses
  • Goofy smile 8) – Eight followed by a parentheses
  • Tongue sticking out :p – Colon followed by a lowercase “p”
  • Smiling devil 3:) – Three followed by a colon and parentheses
  • Smiling angel 0:) – Zero followed by a colon and parentheses
  • Angry >:( – Hold shift and press period, followed by a colon and parentheses
  • Pouting X( – Uppercase “X ” followed by parentheses
  • Shocked =0 – Equals sign followed by a zero
  • Skeptical =/ – Equals sign followed by a forward slash
  • Embarrassed =X – Equals sign followed by an uppercase “X”
  • Devious smile >:) – Hold shift and press period, followed by a colon and parentheses
  • Tear :’( – Colon, followed by apostrophe, followed by parentheses
  • Frustrated X( – Uppercase “X” followed by a parentheses
  • Love <3 – Hold shift and press the comma button, followed by a “3″

4.Insert two spaces after the period following the appropriate sentence, and then insert the emoticon. Here is an example of an emoticon in a sentence: “I’ve been really sick for about a week. :( The doctor says I have the flu.”

5.If desired, insert a nose into any of the emoticons by inserting a dash between the eyes and the mouth, as shown in the emoticons below:

  • Happy :-)
  • Very happy =)
  • Grinning :-D
  • Wink smile ;-)
  • Goofy smile 8-)
  • Tongue sticking out :-p
  • Smiling devil 3:-)
  • Smiling angel 0:-)
  • Angry >:-(
  • Pouting X-(
  • Shocked =-0
  • Skeptical =-/
  • Embarrassed =X
  • Devious smile >:-)
  • Tear :’-(
  • Frustrated X-(

6. Enter two spaces following the smiley face before beginning the next sentence.
